For me the New Year isn’t so much about making resolutions as it is about returning to a balanced state. After gorging myself on sweets & treats and delicious food & drink for the past few weeks, it is time to dust off my bike & take it for a spin around the neighborhood a few times. Will I do this every day for the next year? Nope. But will I do it until I feel like I am back in balance, comfortable in my skin (and jeans!) again? Definitely.
The same thing happens with our homes after a gift-heavy holiday like Christmas. Closets & cabinets become full, stuffed-- much like a belly after Christmas dinner. It’s time to pack up the holiday decorations, remove the giant tree that has been in the living room for a month & find homes for new gifts received.
January is a chance to reset the balance. To find the click point.
I was first introduced to the term “click point” back in 2015 when I discovered “The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up”, though as soon as I read it, I knew I had experienced what Marie Kondo was describing. The click point is that moment when you step back and say, “Ah ha- that’s it! That’s just the right amount of stuff for this space.” It can take a lot of shifting & reducing of items before you get there, but once you find it, it’s like it was always meant to be that way.
The “just-right” amount of stuff looks different for everyone. For some it may be a cozy room with cherished objects thoughtfully on display. For others it may be cleared counters & simplified bookshelves. Even though the rooms may look different, the feeling of balance & “just-rightness” is the same.
As you move through your home this January making space for your new gifts & treasures, be on the lookout for your click point.
Keep reducing until you find it.
